This newsletter is more devoted to maintenece and care of your system.
Some people have not been reading the newsletters and doing the things
that I have been typeing and hence, there have been bad hard drives,
file loss, Windows having to be reinstalled, Power supplies burnt out
because there was so much dust and had to replace almost everything in
the system because of it. If you follow the steps, your system will
last a long time with no problems. I make it as simple as possible to
explain how to do the things you need to do and if you do not understand
let me know so I can try to make it simplier for you. If you don't do
it, don't cry cause you lost all your files or you had to replace parts
that were over $500 to replace due to neglect. Also, there are some
out there that have been due a cleaning that have not replied back to
me to clean the systems. If you are one of them, contact me.
NOTE: If you have a system from me and it is through neglect that you
are not getting the system cleaned and it crashes because of it, you
will be also saying goodbye to your warranty because I will know if it
has been cleaned or not and damaged by neglect. Systems purchased
before January 2000 only have a one year warranty on them and it is
those systems that should be cleaned and maintained to last you.
Unless otherwise noted to do so when I type "click" I am saying to left
click the mouse one time. If I need you to right click I will type it.
If I need you to double left click I will type it also.

time you defrag but after you clean out your mail folders.
***** FPROT ANTIVIRUS AND NORTON OR MCAFEE *****
I have found that a lot of you are not updating your antivirus software
like you are supposed to or not have done it at all. You need to do
this if you want protected. If you don't while you are on the internet
then don't bother updateing, but when you get a virus don't blame me,
blame yourself.
----- FPROT -----
I don't know how much easier I cam make it from what it used to be to
update FProt. If there is let me know. To get the F-Prot updates you
need to get two files from the site http://www.ncol.net/abarc and go
to near the bottom of the page and click on the scale icons next to
where it says F-Prot. Once the page loads you will need to download
two files. One is called Macro and the other is called sign. Get both!
Once you get them and have downloaded and saved in you E:/Downloads
directory you can install them. The instructions are on the web page
where you are getting the files from. The only problem you will have
like I have found from some of you is if you did not update winzip to
the version 7.0 that I told you to do back in January you will not be
able to unzip the files.
You do not need to download the F-Prot file unless you see the date
changes on it from the current month of April when it was put in and
most of you already have it, so just get the macro and sign files.
----- Norton -----
To update Norton it is VERY easy. Double click the Norton icon down
in your system tray to the right bottom next to the clock. On the big
button that says LIVEUPDATE click it. Make sure that you are logged
on the internet. Tell it to find device automatically and put check
marks in the boxes it displays on the screen that you can update.
Click update. All Done. If it needs to reboot windows it will tell
you, if not, close out when done and your done.
----- McAfee -----
Oh the nightmare! You have to go to the web page to get the .dat files
that you need to get. Most of you cannot update the program anymore,
but you can still get you dat files to update. Go to the address here
to get and download the dat files.
For the 4X engine click http://download.mcafee.com/updates/4xa.asp
For the 3X engine click http://download.mcafee.com/updates/3xa.asp
When the page loads click Download Now (without Download Demon)
Save them in your E:\Downloads directory. Once you get them, go to
that directory and double click them to install the updates.
If you don't know the version or engine that you have, bring up the
McAfee Antivirus. Click on Help. Click on about. This will tell
you what version you have.
----- Running F-Prot in DOS -----
You should run F-Prot in DOS mode at least once a week. To do this you
may have to print this out if you cannot remember how to do it because
you cannot read these instructions in there.
Reboot the system or shutdown, it don't matter.
Turn on the computer.
Get ready to press a key just before you see it say loading windows
95/98. WindowsME has NO DOS, Microsoft is taking control.
For Windows95 press the F8 key located at the top row of your keyboard
For Windows98 press and hold the CTRL key
If Windows starts loading you missed it, press CTRL+Alt+Delete to reboot.
You will have a menu come up and you want to select Command Prompt Only
Most are number 5 and some are number 6
It will now load to the C Prompt and you should have C:\ on your screen
type f-prot (if I did not install it you have to manually go where it is.
Do not forget the dash in f-prot.
Press enter till it starts running, normally 3 times.
When it is done and you do not have a virus press the Esc Key located on
the top left of your keyboard til you are completely out of F-Prot.
If you have a virus, call me before you exit f-prot.
If you do not have a virus just reboot the computer by hitting your
reset button or turn off the computer or press and hold the CTRL key and
the ALT key and tap the Delete key.
Running F-Prot is more reliable then both Norton or McAfee because some
virus's attack the antivirus software running in windows right away and
you may never know you have a virus. They will not attack F-Prot because
it is running in DOS, so therefore, do not run it in Windows or the virus
will attack it also.
**** SCANDISK AND DEFRAGMENTATION *****
Those of you that have Norton Speed disk run that instead of running the
windows defragmentation.
Now, this is the cause of most all hard drive failures as far as the tasks
not being done. To keep your hard drive in clean running order you need
to do these two things or you will eventually slow down and then crash.
Run Scandisk at least once a month.
Run Defragmentation once a week (Speed Disk for those that have that.)
To run these two click on Start.
Move to programs.
Move to Accessories. (For those with PIII's go to Utilities menu)
Move to System Tools.
Click either Scandisk or Defragmentation. They are both in there.
When Running Scandisk, before you start there are two options under
type of test. There is standard and there is Thorough. Select the
little round button that says Thorough. Also select the box that
says Automatically fix errors. If you know what you are doing you
can leave the box unchecked, but, if you don't know what to do with
problems that may occur then put a check in that box.
***** PRINTER CARTRIDGES *****
I have found another Printer cartridge place. They are new and don't
have much yet, but they are taking suggestions in order to grow and to
support us. I am going to submit to them a list of the printers that
we have out here. They may have yours already and will let you know
the price as soon as I hear from you if they have it. Most are real
cheap. For example, mine in the store for a color ink cartridge is
$39.99 and I get them for $8.00. My black ink cartridge in the store
is $26.00 and I get them for $4.00. Now for those of you that read
these newsletters it will pay off now. Now, this is what I need for
you to do to give me the information that I need. If you want to you
can also tell me the info of a friends printer if you like, but let
me know that also. Ok, this is the info that I need:
Printer Model (Epson 750, Canon BJC250, HP800C, Lexmark Z11, Etc..)
The number that is on the cartridge. You may have to take out your
cartridge to see it. Some numbers are as follows to give you an idea
of what to look for:
Canon BJC 70/50/80 black cartridge number is BCI-11BK
Canon BJC 4000 / 2000 series color cartridge is BCI-21C
Epson Stylus 750 color cartridge is S020193
Okidata Okijet 2020 / 2500 color cartridges is 52110002/3/4
HP DeskJet 500 series is 51626A
Lexmark Z-11 black is 13620HC
Send me a NEW message with the information so that I can file it here
and can start requesting if they have not got it. Send it as soon as
you can so I can put them all in at once. Only gonna wait about a week
at most to be fair to those that need them shortly.
I can also get toner and drums for laserjet printers also, so let me
know about those also.
If you want to see if I carry the cartridge you need click here:
http://www.ncol.net/abarc/printer.htm
***** WINDOWS SHORTCUT KEYS *****
In the last newsletter I gave you the shortcut for getting to windows
explorer which was the Windows key and the letter E and the minimize/
maximize all windows with the Windows key and the letter D. Here are
two more for you.
Click an empty clean area on your desktop. Now press the F3 key and
this will bring up your find all files dialog box. Another way to
bring it up is to press the Windows key and tap the letter F. If you
want to find through the whole computer system press the CTRL+Windows
and tap the letter F.
Windows + F = Open Find all files dialog box.
F3 (on Desktop) = Open Find all files dialog box.
CTRL + Windows + F = Open Find Computer dialog box.
Windows Explorer & Netscape Shortcut to go back to previous page hold
down the ALT key and tap your left arrow.
Internet Explorer - To scroll down the page hold down the Alt key and
press the down arrow. Netscape - To scroll down the page hold down the
CTRL key and press the down arrow or just press the up and down key alone.
If you practice these shortcut keys you will be able to get like me and
not even use the mouse at all or very rarely. Once you master the keys
you will find yourself going through windows and completing tasks faster
then before and with also less mistakes. Mistakes I am referring to is
the fact people get faster with the mouse and accidently click things as
they are moving the mouse and there for can end up in trouble not knowing
what they just did or not even know they did it as they did it. Useing
the keys you cannot make the mistakes.
